Hunger & Poverty – Social

hungerAndPoverty1It is impossible to separate the issues of poverty and hunger. Trying to understanding the causes of these devastating issues is difficult yet crucial to finding solutions. The solutions to poverty and hunger are as equally complicated and interrelated as the problems themselves. The following definition of food security is widely used: Year-round access to the amount and variety of safe foods required by all household members in order to lead active and healthy lives, without undue risk of losing such access. No country anywhere in the world is food secure based on this definition.
Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is the number one goal of The United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals 2015. Their estimates show that 1.4 billion people in developing countries were living in extreme poverty in 2005.

There is increasing evidence that fighting hunger also helps reduce poverty.

  • Under nourishment decreases labor productivity,
  • lowers resistance to illness,
  • impairs school performance in children,
  • while spreading from one generation to the next.

Statistics from the United Nations tell us that seventy-five percent of the poor and hungry in the world live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Poverty alleviation must begin with agricultural development in rural areas. Small farm families can progressively work their way out of poverty when they have access information, technology, and to high-quality agricultural tools.Pie Chart
